There are reasons why people should shop l0cal here in the Comox Valley; looking at how lucky we are to live in a place where we can grow our own fruits, veggies, meat, and other items.
If we support our local farmers, the more money they make, the more food they can produce, including those who prefer to buy organic.
We live on an island. Researchers say we have enough food to last us for three full days in the event of a earthquake or other emergency. We also need to take into consideration that there are those who cannot help themselves, like those with disablities, or seniors in homes etc.
I look at the size of yard and lots that some people have. They may not be large but people don't need a huge yard to have a simple fruit, veggie, herb garden. For very person that can grow enough to feed themselves, in the event of an emegency, that's extra food that does not have to come from another source to feed those who are vulnerable.
It's best to keep it local.
There are services that will deliver fresh fruit & veggies from local farms. For example, Sunshine Organics deliver in Cumberland. People may think, "Well, I can't afford it. " But I've priced what they charge in the store and I know that its actually cheaper to shop local considering how far that food took to get here. How fresh is it really?
There are times in the Winter when you can't get the fresh farm food, however they usually start in late spring and continue to late September or October.
Chemicals, pollution, contaminated soil. These are issues that we have to deal with as well. People seem to make more excuses why they do not have time to attend to a garden. It doesn't have to be huge. You can grow berries in wooden crate boxes so you are not dealing with huge messy vines that take over everything. Did you know that potato's can grow in a bin? (Potatos are best kept in a sack in a cool dark place.)
You know, I never thought that my husband could cook a turkey under ground, or cook an egg on a stick, but research will teach you how if you are at least willing to try,
The more you know, the better your chances of survival. It's something to think about.
