By only 120 votes, Mayor Fred Bates fended off Rick Grinham’s challenge in Cumberland to become the only returning Comox Valley mayor.

As councillor votes were still being counted Saturday night, Bates said he was pleased with the result in which he defeated a strong charge by the former school board chair.

The election capped an emotional week during which Cumberland council passed a crucial third reading on a huge development proposal by Trilogy Properties that has divided the community.

“There is a message to be very careful,” Bates commented about the close vote. “I’m going to go ahead with development to keep Cumberland green and keep with the village agenda.”

He said he is looking forward to working with Greg Phelps and Paul Ives, elected as new mayors of Courtenay and Comox, respectively.

The quote I want to bring your attention to is the following:

"There is a message to be very careful," Bates commented about the close vote. "I'm going to go ahead with development to keep Cumberland green and keep with the village agenda."

Fred: Your comment (above) to the reporter for the CVR, Mark Allen, is interesting in its apparent arrogance.

"I'm going to go ahead with the development. . ."

Is it all up to you?
What about the current council?
What about the newly elected council?
What about advice from the staff?

Further: What is the "village agenda"? Is the long term agenda all worked out in advance? That is, approval of all development proposals approved in advance, without reference to the new council?

Please let us know more clearly what your personal plans for the village are? and whether those plans involve the council members?

You were not elected with an overwhelming majority! Many people in B C are talking to the government about a municipal recall procedure.....

Thanks for your attention.
