Congratulations to all participants of the Big Time Out Music and Arts Festival that was held in Cumberland this month. The organizers, artists and musicians, volunteers and audience are to be commended for a job well done. Once again we are reminded of the value of arts and culture in our society.
Part of what contributed to the festival's success was its location in Village Park. Visitors to Cumberland were able to camp surrounded by forests and mountains, nestled in amongst the trees. What is hard to believe is that Cumberland Council and its Mayor are willing to consider a proposal by Trilogy to put a road through this setting and eliminate the BMX park contained within. Compounding this absurdity is councils' willingness to consider proposals by a private developer on how to design our cherished and well-utilized public space. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
BMX is now an Olympic sport. Why not make Coal Hills BMX park a training centre for future Olympians? Dare to dream Cumberland.
Grassroots involvement in Cumberland on the arts, culture and recreation fronts distinguish this community. One is left to wonder who's interests council serves and why aren't they listening to the public?
Sincerely,
