The year in review for the Village of Cumberland shows lots of change of the positive kind, said Mayor Fred Bates.

A letter from the mayor opening the 2007 Annual Report said he’s proud of how the ‘have-not’ village has become a major player in the Comox Valley.

“During this past year, we have quantified our infrastructure issues and clearly stated the vision of a community open for business, while maintaining the Village lifestyle,” said Bates, saying that by sticking to a vision they’ve attracted top-quality developers.

“I expect that within a five-year span, Cumberland will be a showcase of green, sustainable development which will make us all proud of our community,” he writes.

The letter is a part of the annual report, required by local governments to produce. It includes a review of their goals and achievements, as well as the final prepared consolidated financial documents for 2007.

While the money is tight this year as they face an infrastructure deficit like many other Canadian communities, Bates said in his letter that the growth they’ve seen in interest will be a positive step in the long term.

“I firmly believe we are going in the right direction. Council has been very strong on maintaining our vision. While there have been amendments to the Official Community PLan, it is our belief that the changes are not such that they change the intent nor the vision, established by the community.”
