Cumberland's Chamber of Commerce recognized people and businesses which are leading the way in their community this week.
During Monday's annual awards dinner at The Great Escape, four awards were presented to people making an extra effort in the village.
Certified general accountant Elaine Blackburn, received the chamber's newest award, one added this year to recognize outstanding customer service.
"This is a business owner who deserves to be recognized," said chamber vice-president Meaghan Cursons, thanking Blackburn for her efforts to help community groups and seniors in particular.
Dr. Mark Woldnik was given the John Leung service award, for opening his own office in the village after the Cumberland medical clinic closed last year.
"He fought to keep his doors open," said John Jones, president of the chamber.
Woldnik said it was a bit of a jump for him to open his own office, but the support of staff and the desire to help in Cumberland, has made it a growing success.
The chamber's business of the year award went to Dodge City Video. Unfortunately, owner Kathy Kelly couldn't be at Monday's dinner to receive the award.
With numerous nominations for her work with the Cumberland Residents' Association, the Cumberland Community Forest Society and the Perseverance Park committee, it was an easy decision to give Grace Doherty the George Stockand citizen of the year award.
Cursons told the audience that Doherty stood out particularly for her work in building communication and understanding between the village's municipal council and residents.
Doherty said volunteering takes the help of many people but that she was honoured to be recognized.
Cumberland Mayor Fred Bates praised the winners when he was called up to install the year's chamber board.
"What great choices you made," he said about the recipients.
John Jones (president), Meaghan Cursons (vice-president), Amy James (treasurer) and Kate Jones and Jeremy Grasby (directors) were all installed in the ceremony. Arlo McCubbin, Benn Pridham and Ann Jannsen will also be joining them on the board.
With a new board and lots of fresh energy, Jones said he was enthusiastic about the year to come.
"We've got a good chamber, a growing chamber ... we're only moving in one direction and that's forward."
