Logging In Cumberland's Watershed
On the morning of Sunday Feb.24, 2008, I awoke to the sound of distant machinery south of Cumberland. I recognized it as the sound of a feller buncher, a single-operator logging machine that can take down a whole forest in a day. That sound, familiar to me from a previous encounter with one on Cortes Island, impelled me to make an arduous hike south of town to witness what it was doing in our watershed.

What I witnessed along the way to and from the site was very disturbing: huge areas of blown down trees, many of them clogging little creeks; numerous slash piles ready for burning in our airshed; acres of land unrecognizeable as forest, littered with the detritus of questionable logging practices.
What disturbs me even more is that most slash piles are easily accessible by vehicle, thus making them easily harvestable for fire wood. Yet, this is seldom, if ever, allowed by the people who own and treat the land like this.
Why not?
On my walk I encountered markings indicating that there are many more acres of forest slated for this kind of devastation, all within walking distance of our "village in the forest."
Are we as a village people going to stand by and simply let others plunder our environment like this without any kind of resistance or call for accountability?
Demand that Mayor and Council address the issue of unaccountable logging in our watershed!
