“We believe that our proposed development demonstrates the most up-to-date practises in community planning, infrastructure development, social and economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship. As the citizens of Cumberland become more familiar with the ideas proposed in the Master Plan, we trust that they will recognize and embrace the contribution to the community that “Smart Growth” planning principles and responsible development bestows.” John Evans, President, Trilogy Group of Companies, December 2006

Among the proposed principle uses Trilogy Land Corp. wants to include in a zoning bylaw for land at the corner of the Comox Valley Parkway and Inland Island Highway, is a casino.

Imagine for a moment that many of the people attracted to such an edifice will be Albertans, awash with cash, who simply "pop over for the weekend" on one of WestJet's multiple daily flights. Such short-hall flights are one of the most polluting of all forms of travel. ( See the website Plane Stupid).

In the face of global warming, do Cumberlanders want to encourage the further development of such an obviously unsustainable lifestyle by granting Trilogy permission to go ahead with such a possibility?

But what can we do?
1. Write to the Gaming Commission, Village Mayor and Council, MLA, etc. with your comments.
2. Initiate a petition at your church, school, place of employment explaining why you are opposed (if you are?) to formalized gambling run by corporations, in the Comox Valley.
3, 4, and 5 as you see fit.
