I consider recent slash burning by TimberWest Corporation on properties near Cumberland to be completely unacceptable, primarily for the detriment such burning poses to the air quality of our village.

The risk to our health from such an intense form of air pollution is obvious.

At the regular village council meeting on November 26, 2008 I introduced my concern to those in attendance and asked Mayor Bates and Council to support my intention to have such practices stopped, at least in our area.

This letter is to further educate mayor and council about alternatives to slash burning and to ask that they meet with TimberWest on behalf of our citizenry to have such practice stopped.

The following article link leads to information about practical ways of reducing slash piles to a manageable and valuable resource. CLICK HERE to read the article.

Please, if you endorse this initiative, let mayor and council know your concerns by emailing them directly to the village staff for forwarding:

Having two young children with asthma, that leaves our family rushing to the hospital multiple times a year, I am extremely concerned that they are burning slash.... especially this time of year. Anyone who has lived in Cumberland for years has seen the effect that inversion has in our Valley. The cool dense air settling on the valley floor causes the smoke to accumulate... There are a couple of areas in Cumberland where this is particularly noticable(Camp Road being one of them). Our air quality is already quite poor between the use of wood burning stoves and backyard waste burning. The added air pollution from these TimberWest burns should be a concern for everyone in the community.
