Courtenay council received and agreed with a report from planning services recommending they object to the applications for rezoning adjacent to or on the Inland Island Highway referred by the Village of Cumberland.

The report states they are clearly contrary to the policies in the city’s official community plan, the memorandum of understanding on the management of land use along the Inland Island Highway Corridor, and the Protocol on Managing Growth in the Comox Valley.

According to director of planning services Peter Crawford’s report, the application also fails to address any contributions to major infrastructure upgrades as a result of the development. Coun. Greg Phelps noted Cumberland’s small fire department and the lack of any plan to increase the department’s size.

“The lack of a cohesive, Valley-wide plan has me concerned,” said Phelps, whose concerns were echoed by Mayor Starr Winchester.

“I agree,” she said. “I think it’s unfortunate that early on we were not engaged in the process. It would be nice if we could sit down with Cumberland council and have a discussion. We all want to see Cumberland prosper.”
