Signatures put on paper this week will bring together communities on nearly opposite sides of the world for the future.
A delegation from
Putian, in the Fujian province of China will be in Cumberland Monday to sign a sister-city agreement with the village — and a letter of intent to develop cultural and economic ties with the Comox Strathcona Regional District.
“We welcome this delegation which is coming to Cumberland to complete the last step of our mutual journey toward a sister city agreement,” said Mayor Fred Bates of Cumberland in a press release.
“This all began as our village began the reconnection with our cultural past, which has a heavy involvement of Chinese workers in mining and lumbering in our area.”
Bates has made two trips to Putian in the past year, and has already signed the first half of the sister-city signing.
In their discussions regarding that designation, the Chinese officials expressed interest in developing relationships with other parts of B.C. as well. The CSRD board agreed to supporting that initiative.
The meeting ties in well with a recent letter from the Ministry of Community Services, recommending to municipalities across the province that they look at ways of developing economic ties with Asia.
“We’re very pleased in this area to be ahead of their goals,” said Bates to the Comox Strathcona Regional District committee of the whole this week.
The signing ceremony with the Putian delegation will take place at 10 a.m. at the Cumberland village office.
