Water information will flow Wednesday

Ratepayers in the Union Bay Improvement District will get some answers next week to questions many of them are asking — what’s going on with the proposed regional water system, and how the UBID will be affected.
“We realize the landowners have some general concerns and we’re hoping by having all parties at the table (we’ll be) able to answer those questions,” said David Godfrey, UBID board of trustees chair.
Representatives from the UBID, the Ministry of Community Services and the Comox Strathcona Regional District will attend a public meeting Wednesday at the Union Bay Community Hall at 7 p.m.
The parties have met recently to try and work out the interim measures involving Langley Lake — Union Bay’s current water source — until Comox Lake becomes the main source for the broader area. It’s a proposal the UBID has already agreed to in principle.
“It is complicated — and somewhat confusing, so it was just getting our heads around it,” said Godfrey about a meeting earlier this week.
They’re not releasing any more information until the meeting — and there will still be questions relating to how the agreement will impact the Kensington proposal that can’t be answered, said Godfrey, as the developer and regional district continue their in-camera meetings.
Nonetheless, Godfrey said he doesn’t think people need be concerned that this issue will stop the 845-acre development from going forward.
“I think we’ll probably come to an agreement that will allow for it — and that’s what we’re hoping for,” said Godfrey.
