Cumberland and Royston are getting a chance to see if a proposed amalgamation of the two would be a viable option.

The Ministry of Community Services has agreed to a $10,000 grant for a preliminary study into the effects of Cumberland extending its boundaries to incorporate the northern portion of the regional district’s Area A.

While Minister Ida Chong said she feels the priority for local governments in the Comox Valley is the split of the Comox Strathcona Regional District (CSRD), she added that she also supports in principle the need to study the implications of a Cumberland-Royston marriage.

Directors of the Royston Improvement District asked Cumberland to consider the amalgamation after asking residents for possible future plans.

The grant will look at a service inventory for the two bodies, an official boundary analysis and proposal, potential tax implications and more.
