The Cumberland Chamber of Commerce says it is presenting the first in a series of open air markets this weekend in the Village Square.
The Chamber has invited arts and craftspeople to display and sell their paintings, photographs, pottery, instruments, jewelry, art cards and other made-in-the-Valley items this Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. in the heart of the historical village of Cumberland.
The Village Square provides a unique, interactive venue where people of all ages can experience the sights and sounds of a European-style open-air market, the chamber adds in a news release.
In addition to arts and crafts, the Chamber of Commerce will hold its second fundraising book sale. Proceeds will go to the presentation of future events in and around the village. Anyone interested in putting their unwanted books to good use can bring them to the square and the Chamber people will gladly find a home for them.
Music for this event will be provided live by jazz guitarist Tony Wilson and his trio.
Wilson has been known to perform with many great musicians from the international jazz scene, notes the Chamber. Vancouver’s Coastal Jazz & Blues hails him as “unquestionably one of the most original guitar stylists on the Canadian scene.”
Also live in the square is internationally acclaimed guitarist Peter Gilmore. Gilmore has played Celtic, jazz and other styles in his native Ireland and beyond for several decades. He’s joined by fiddler Tim Brown.
If you’re into high-calibre jazz and Celtic music played with West Coast heart, you won’t want to miss this, says the Chamber.
There still may be room in the Square for people who make things by hand. If you’re interested, call Bobby Herron at 336-2270, e-mail rudeboyshaw.ca or call the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce at 336-8313.
