Cumberland councillors are asked to weigh in on what the impacts of a water protection plan for Comox Lake would be — and whether or not one needs to be ordered.
In a letter to council from mid-Island chief medical health officer Dr. Charmaine Enns, she writes, “I am concerned that potential exists for degradation of source water quality, loss of adequate supply, localized development beyond water capacity, and the creation of multiple water systems which may lack the long- term viability to ensure a safe water supply.”
As a result, she said, she’s considering recommending a drinking water protection plan be completed on the source (which Cumberland doesn’t use for its system, but as a recreation site) by the provincial Ministry of Health — to be done in hand with a management plan by the environment ministry.
Before she makes that recommendation, though, she’s asked to meet with local government representatives Aug. 20 to discuss the potential impacts.
Enns was not available for comment.

As of Aug. 1, Stage 2 water restrictions for the Village of Cumberland will be in effect.
That means lawn watering is allowed once a week — even-numbered houses can water on Wednesday from 4 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., while odd-numbered houses can water on Thursday at the same hours. Watering by hand-held containers or hoses with shut-offs is still permitted.
While Stage 1 is automatically in effect from May 1 to Sept. 30, an increase in the stages can be recommended by the chief administrative officer in consultation with the public works foreman considering water usage and supply for the effective summer dates.
