Following is an open letter received from Leslie Baird:

It is with a sense of deep appreciation for all Cumberland residents I accept the nomination to run for Mayor of Cumberland.

It has been my honour to serve as Village Councillor for the past 21 years, including two years as your Regional District representative.

This is a critical period for our community, where experience and sound leadership is required.

We are all aware of the need to seek credible and affordable water and sewer solutions. Solid waste remains a top priority. Few know that we will soon be accepting Campbell Rivers garbage. We need to take a firm stand to ensure the Village is compensated for the extra wear and tear on our roads. We also need to ensure state of the art landfill management. It is no longer acceptable to allow leachate to enter into our watersheds.

There is a need to update the Official Community Plan. All residents should have the right to be heard. All citizens rights should be respected. There is a need to ensure our plan fits seamlessly into the Regional Growth Strategy. By working together we can achieve far more to improve the lives of Village residents.

Communication is key, and we are far more effective with your input. If elected Mayor, you will be heard, and your ideas valued.

You undoubtedly know there are a myriad of issues to deal with. It will take time to address each one of them. But we will.

As your Mayor I will start with the issues impacting the community directly. Your needs, community events, heritage, roads and streets, keeping taxes in check. We will adopt bylaws which will enable community participation, not inhibit it.

We may be a small Village, but we will also do our part to lower our carbon footprint. We will think globally and act locally. I`m happy to report staff has begun this process by undertaking an audit of our carbon footprint.

My door is open, but even more importantly is my mind. If elected the first woman Mayor in Cumberland`s history I will set up regular public meetings which will accommodate your schedule. Everyone will have a voice.

I look forward to hearing from you, and can be reached at either the Village Office, 250-336-2291, or at my resident number which is 250-336-2718.

I extend to outgoing Mayor Fred Bates and to long serving Councillor Moncrief my heartfelt thank you. Your dedication is unparalleled.

Lastly, it is with sincere humility I request your support, your vote, on November 19th. Thank you.
