In consideration of the current economic/environmental crisis and its local effects,

The INTERNATIONAL SURREALIST MOVEMENT puts forth
these humble, yet IMMEDIATE DEMANDS for an
AUTONOMOUS CUMBERLAND;

1. Re-appropriate all lands surrounding the village, incorporating them as an
extension of the community forest.

2. Abolish all forms of industrial and so-called urban ‘development’ and resource
extraction within the village and surrounding lands (i.e.; Trilogy, Compliance Coal,
logging, etc).

3. Banish pro-development village councilors (i.e.; the ‘old boy’s club’, you know who
you are!) to the sewage slough.

4. Dismantle the Royston Rd. overpass and rebuild Boulder Hill to its former wild,
forested glory.

5. Make the new tourist information centre in to one large apiary with adjacent
orchard. Free honey for all!

6. Rename streets to honor heroes of Cumberland’s past labour battles, buried
anonymous Chinese and other migrant workers, esp. Dunsmuir Avenue; renaming it
Goodwin Avenue after murdered comrade Ginger Goodwin, closing said street to
vehicle traffic reserving it to foot, alpaca, black bear, emu and cougars.

7. Disband village council and establish consensus-based decision-making through
neighborhood groups in the interest of mutual aid. From the Paris Commune to the
Cumberland Commune!

8. Eliminate currency; replace with the economy of the gift and a continuous potlatch.

9. A daily carnival and dancing in the streets to live music.

10. Extension of the Cumberland Museum and Archives into a free school with
programs on local first nations history and mythology, radical worker’s history, global
-ethno and experimental music and art.

11. Abolish ‘Empire Days’ to be replaced with May Day on May 1st in celebration of
Beltane, wild nature and ‘International Worker’s Day’ leaving behind the shame of
empire and capital forever.

12. Make the Cumberland Peace Park a true monument for peace and marvelous
freedom by converting it and other vacant lots into community gardens and abstract
sculpture installations.

13. Adopt above principles into an official community plan for autonomy that includes
the secession of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands from Canada as independent
autonomous republics.
