Campbell River Museum
From February 8-20, the Campbell River Museum will be hosting the fabulous textile art exhibit, Turning the Tide, that has been touring Western Canada.

The 52 works were created by 30 artists belonging to the Comox Valley’s North Island Quilters For Community Awareness group, and will be auctioned off at a gala event in Victoria on March 12. This is a one time opportunity to view them before they find permanent homes.

The exhibits are art pieces with a direct social purpose and all were created to raise funds for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign; launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to raise money for grandmothers in Africa caring for children orphaned by HIV and AIDS.

Twenty three different grandmother’s groups from Winnipeg to Vancouver Island have been working to promote and exhibit the textile art. There are 70 – 100 members in the Campbell River Grandmothers, and they have been fundraising for the past two years. Earlier in June 2010, grandmothers across Canada, including the Campbell River chapter, organized walks to show support of their counterparts in Africa. The funds raised provide help in the form of food, housing, schooling and grief counselling.

Examples of the textiles are on the Comox Valley grandmother’s website at www.glaciergrannies.org; however they should be experienced in person for their beauty, craftsmanship and 'wow' factor.

An opening tea and reception will be held at the Museum on February 13th from 1-4pm, with the works being on display from February 8th to 20th. Prior to that, the show is on view at the Pearl Ellis Gallery in Comox starting January 19th, and will be at the Martin Batchelor Gallery in Victoria from February 24th – March 10th.

Admission to the Campbell River Museum gallery is free. The Museum is open Tuesday – Sunday from 12 – 5pm. For further information contact catherine.gilbertcrmuseum.ca or call the Museum at 250-287-3103.
