Project Watershed Society
Comox Valley Project Watershed Society was at The Big Time Out in Cumberland this year in collaboration with community way. The goal was to show how using cw$’s supports Project Watershed and to exchange some cw into Canadian in the process. Valeri Diamond summed up the event saying “The response was tremendous and the outcome exceeded our expectations. Festival goers, even those from out of the valley, were interested in the process and most jumped on board buying community way on the spot”.

Over 83 festival goers supported Project Watershed through buying a total of cw$ 1000. This success is twofold, Project Watershed raised $1000 Canadian and the $1000 community way sold will be circulated in the community generating perpetual business and trade. Raising $1000 Canadian at an event of this nature is a record amount for Project Watershed. This money will help Project Watershed restore and protect Comox Valley watersheds through education, information and action.

Community way is a Comox Valley currency created by local businesses donating to community groups thus community way supports community groups and local business. So far 66 local businesses have donated over cw$ 130,000 to 34 Comox Valley charities. Nine of the vendors at The Big Time Out were accepting community way dollars; Betty Beadazzled, The Gathering Place, The Green Room, Healing Botanical, Jipsi Clothing, Lots of Laughs Balloons, Organic Family Natural, White Caps Cappuccino’s, and Yummies & Gyros. Project Watershed would like to thank all these vendors for their involvement and support as they gave people the opportunity to spend their cw$ on site.

Project Watershed would also like to thank the team of volunteers who devoted their time to make this event a success, along with Sure Copy who provided the promotional material. Another big thank you goes to the Big Time Out for having us at the festival and introducing us to the crowd on the main stage.

A complete list of businesses that accept cw$’s along with the charity organizations that have received donations from local businesses can be found on the community way website at www.communityway.ca. You can also contact them if you wish to sign up as a participating business.

Project Watershed is an enterprising non-profit society that was established in 1993 by a small group of citizens concerned by declining fish stocks, water quality, and rapid urban development in Comox Valley watersheds. Often working in partnership with local stewardship organizations, industry and all levels of government, Project Watershed promotes community stewardship through education, information and action projects.

Project Watershed offers professional conservation mapping and related technical services, hosts regular Streamkeeper & Wetlandkeeper courses, maintains a stewardship information library, and currently manages research, restoration, assessment, protection and awareness raising projects in the Courtenay River Estuary and Puntledge River watershed.
