Dear Editor,
On behalf of the
Comox Valley Project Watershed Society, we would like to extend a huge thank you to the Members of the long-range patrol squadron, and to MCpl. Alan Phillips, of the 407 Squadron Maintenance Section from 19 Wing Comox for their community service activity in cleaning the beaches at Goose Spit.
The
Comox Valley Project Watershed Society has as one of its mandates to encourage Community Stewardship of sensitive natural areas. The efforts of our military, who are an integral part of the larger community that we call the Comox Valley, set a standard that all of the rest of us who live in the valley should follow.
One of our Society’s current efforts deals with the Courtenay River Estuary. We have been mounting an
Estuary Awareness Campaign since the first of the year. Goose Spit is the partially open “door” that separates the Courtenay River estuary from the Pacific Ocean. An estuary is a semi-enclosed coastal body of water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea. The two major ecological communities at Goose Spit, the salt marsh community and the sand dune community are sensitive and integral parts of our wondrous estuary’s shoreline.
The pressure put on these two communities by human activity can clearly be documented by the type of materials collected by the military during their clean up; over 1400 pounds of human garbage (see
Comox Valley Record, March 20, 2010).
We hope their efforts bring two important messages to the residents of the Comox Valley:
1. We as a community have to collectively take responsibility to care for our sensitive environments and routinely do “clean ups’ on areas like Goose Spit where human activity is very high.
2. We, as residents of the Comox Valley, must strive to do better in keeping our environments natural and clean.
Congratulations to MCPc. Alan Phillips and his military comrades. You have set an example and a standard that all of us in the Comox Valley should aspire to achieve.
Sincerely,
Paul Horgen, Board Member
