With the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racism fast approaching, it is a good time to reflect on the benefits of cultural diversity. In an increasingly global world, traditional boundaries around countries, economies, industries, and people break down. Even in small communities, such as the Comox Valley, you will see more diversity than ever before. As the world continues to shrink (metaphorically, of course) and our community continues to grow, it is more important than ever to be able to interact with people from other cultures and backgrounds. While race and culture are not the same thing, understanding, accepting and adapting to others will go a long way toward eliminating racism.
Cultural competence is a skill. It takes knowledge, mindfulness and practice to increase your ability to interact with other cultures. Here are some questions you can ask yourself or others that will help you assess your skill level:

• How much time do you spend with people who are culturally different than you?
• How comfortable are you when you are the only one of your culture in a group?
• What have you done to improve your knowledge and understanding of culturally different groups?
• Do you seek out, celebrate and value others who come from a different background than you?

There are many ways to increase your cultural knowledge: travel, reading, joining new groups, volunteering, taking a class on culture or attending a cultural event. In fact, here is one opportunity to show your support for diversity and the elimination of racism: Come join the community on Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 2-3:30pm at the Sid Williams Theatre for Breaking the Barriers, a performance by One World Dance Theatre Group. This FREE event will include a welcome address by former Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo and a community sing- a-long led by Tina Filippino. Sponsored by The Justice Centre, Wachaiy Friendship Centre, World Community Development Education Society, The Women’s Resource Centre (Status of Women),the Comox Valley Multicultural Society, the City of Courtenay and Comox Valley Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Roundtable (WelcomeBC).
