Sierra Comox Valley Mission Statement

Mission

As a Local Group of the B. C. Chapter of Sierra Club Canada, our mission is to help protect, preserve and restore the Comox Valley Bioregion, its ecosystems, species and habitats.
Guiding Principles

Rights

1. The ecosystems of the Comox Valley and their species, including the human species, have an inherent right to existence, to habitat and to achieve their mutual, self-supporting destinies.

An Ecosystem Ethic

2. What happens to one species or part of the system will have an impact on other species and the system as a whole. Protecting ecosystems requires an ecosystem ethic—a responsibility for the system as whole.

A Balance

3. A balance must be maintained between the rights of the human species and the rights of other species. At present the balance is strongly weighted in favour of the rights of the human species and against the rights of other species and the environment as a whole. The balance must be restored.

Citizen Participation

4. The present and future health of the Comox Valley ecosystems will depend, more than anything else, on the involvement of citizens who are part of the bioregion. We will work to ensure active citizen participation in the life of the Comox Valley through research, public education, public information, and involvement in the political process.

Global Concerns

5. Because many of the environmental concerns extend well beyond the Comox Valley and are global in nature, we will work with Sierra Club B.C. Chapter and with other local group and provincial groups to address provincial, national and global issues.
