Ostensible purposes
-manage growth
-ensure food security
-manage traffic
-ensure good education for our children
- retain natural habitat: forests, lakes, oceanfront
- good paying employment for the residents
real purposes
-continuous growth, and development to benefit trilogy, Raven, KIP, and others
- greater car dependence to benefit car dealers, road builders, etc
- more, and larger malls, which will require more importation of goods and services, especially food. (stores apparently have less than a weeks supply)
- replace farms with urban large lot sprawl, and greater car dependency
- make the RGS consultants a lot of $$$, and keep them on the strait and narrow of GROWTH IS NECESSARY AND GOOD
I am really depressed, and expect serious poverty and hunger in the Comox valley within 10 years.

Participation

Carol says, ..."So what if some of us get sucked into the idea of participating, contributing, volunteering, creating common good for our communities etc.?
So what ? Without community input, the politicians and developers create their own 'game plan'. In fact, the only thing that will influence politicians is public opinion and it helps to have it documented so they can develop policy accordingly. By not participating, you are leaving the future up to 'others' and doing exactly what the developers want you to do. Sit back and gripe. Complaints and insults in a letter to a small town newspaper will make no difference at all except to alienate neighbors who are trying to make changes. The developers are laughing all the way to the bank. Its called divide and conquer.
Recently, I was at a meeting reagarding the proposed coal mine. I noticed that, although there were about 200 community members, they were mostly over the age of 50. These are the people who are fighting to ensure quality of life for their grandchildren and future generations. What about those of you under 50 years of age? Are you so beaten down and discouraged that you no longer care about your own children? What will it take to get you to see beyond your immediate needs and instant gratification?
I have been fighting for social and environmental causes for most of my life. I am ready to pass the torch but there is nobody to hand it to. Its time to put your time and energy behind your mouth. Talk is cheap. Take action.

I don't understand how Ron has arrived at his obviously skewed perspective. It would be helpful if he quoted from the draft document or provided feedback about specific statements.

Ron! Don't be depressed! So what if some folks are trying to smooth talk us into becoming the next Langley or Kelowna? So what if some of our elected folk seem to be working for enabling the riches of the huge forest company landowners? So what if some of us get sucked into the idea of participating, contributing, volunteering, creating common good for our communities etc.? Have a latte and chill out Ron. Enjoy the pyramid scheme/ponzi game of life in the Valley. Regional Growth Strategy?Just like the tiny house hippo commercials, it looks really real but you knew it couldn't be true didn't you?
