A recent meeting comprising concerned citizens, Mayor Fred Bates and Inspector Tom Gray of the RCMP has resulted in Cumberland Village Council passing the following resolution:
CRIME RESOLUTION
Baird/Frame: THAT Council adopt the following resolution:
WHEREAS, even though the Village of Cumberland has no more crime than other communities, there is still a strong desire to reduce all crimes in our community, in order to make it a safer, more enjoyable place for all citizens;
AND WHEREAS we must have community support for the RCMP to effectively do their job;
AND WHEREAS there is a group of citizens willing to assist and stand up and be counted;
NOW THEREFORE be it resolved that the Council of the Corporation of the Village of Cumberland establishes a "No Tolerance Policy" effective this date. The Village will not tolerate unlicensed or uninsured vehicles of any kind, vandalism, property damage, intimidation or any other level of criminal offense.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the Corporation of the Village of Cumberland states clearly that drug distribution, alcohol bootlegging, and similar crimes will result in Council making every effort to assist the police in stamping out these blights on our society. We will support community programs to educate and encourage all citizens to take a stand against all crime, and will pass bylaws to increase the cost to offenders or those who enable offenders by allowing, permitting or ignoring such offenses being committed on their property. Council encourages those who witness crimes to come forward and report them to the police, supports such actions and applauds citizens for taking a stand against crime.
