Have you ever really watched the Paralympics? It’s really rather sad that these events don’t get noticed more. The athletes work as hard if not more than Olympians. Its not like Paralympics athletes just go for a pat on the back and a “good job.” They are there to represent their country and win gold.
I think one reason the Paralympics are being overlooked is that it is after the Olympics. Really, who thought that one out? “Hey we should make the Paralympics after the Olympics so they are overshadowed.” Great idea. I realize the Paralympics are tied to the Olympics but why not have the Paralympics before so that they are more in the spotlight of the Olympics stage. I really think this would help the Paralympics become not just the “disabled Olympics” but become an event on its own.
A totally radical idea would be to have the Paralympics on a different year then the Olympics entirely. This would define the Paralympics as a world event on its own and step out of the Olympic shadow. This probably wouldn’t work just because of the cost and extra planning but I still can dream. In the end I really wish that the Paralympics wasn’t just a footnote to the Olympics.
