Tree Planting Ceremony

The public is cordially invited by the Village of Cumberland and the Coal Creek Historic Park Advisory Committee to attend a ceremonial tree planting ceremony at Cumberland No.1 Mine Japanese Town, on October 24, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

Immigrant coal miners established Number 1 Town in 1893. This prominent Japanese community flourished for 49 years until enactment of the War Measures Act by the Government of Canada in 1942. Thirty-one families were ordered to leave and reside in internment camps. The former residents are now living across Canada, the majority in the greater Toronto area.
Thirty-one decorative Mount Fuji cherry trees will be planted on the former town site to represent these families. In the spring of 2010, a permanent bronze plaque will be erected to recognize this project.

This project was made possible by a National Association of Japanese Canadian Endowment Fund grant and the generous donations of former residents and their families.
