No1 Mine Japanese Town was settled by Japanese miners and their families in 1893. It was a thriving community for 49 years until enactment of the federal War Measures Act at the onset of WWII forced the 136 residents into internment camps.
Former residents and their families have donated 31 decorative cherry trees to be planted at the former town site to symbolize the 31 families evacuated.
Planting will take place Saturday, October 24, 2009. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. Please see attached invitation for more details.
