Recently, the Comox Valley received a warning about the H1N1 virus, (formerly known as the Swine Flu,) infiltrating it's vulnerable populations. Generally it enters a population in 3 waves, and the first is currently upon us, as was recently reported in one of our local newspapers. Many of us are familiar with the official details 'fed' to us by elected officials, members of the Medical Community, media, or self-interested parties regarding this virus.

Among many, I have a vested interest in maintaining a healthful community and containing if not eradicating this virus: I am parent and guardian to a budding young child, who is per portably, among the vulnerable populations for this virus. My partner and I have chosen not to vaccinate our child, against anything at this time. (We successfully use homeopathics as a safe alternative practice to vaccinations and pharmaceutical medicines.)

That being said, the feedback from associates and friends with regards to this potential threat focuses on the 'evil doings' of the pharmaceutical companies and 'big brother's' attempts to enslave us. That all may or may not be so, however, whether we choose to admit it or not, the threat of the H1N1 virus, regardless of its origins, is real and can have an effect on your life, and those of your loved ones..

What needs to be emphasized, is not whether we are faced with a threat, but the need for a realistic, balanced appreciation for a phenomenon that is very potentially present in our community, and could kill your young child, unborn fetus, your elderly parent or neighbor. We cannot afford to ignore this reality, less we prefer to live naively, and regret it later. This is not fear mongering.

There is no cause for panic. Panic kills creativity and forces negative solutions upon possibilities for growth. We have a choice now.

What I choose to emphasize, in our home, is lifestyle. This is something we are all individually responsible for, and able to control, within reason. Attitude and nutrition is key: intentions toward eating healthfully with (preferably locally grown) organic veggies, fruit, and whole grains; drinking filtered water - as much as we can handle to cleanse our system daily; moderating the intake of protein, saying no to processed and junk foods and overindulgence; getting regular daily exercise, and taking time to ourselves to nurture our spirits and release stress. All of this is for the most part, within the realm of our control. We need only accept an attitude that we are each, uniquely capable of caring for our perspectives and behaviors. Part of that admission to responsibility is that there are numerous resources available in our community to help us get a 'leg up' in this area of life should we feel overwhelmed with the task. We need only have the courage to reach out. Talk to someone, open the phone book or search this site...

Keeping our immune systems strong is the one most powerful preventative measures we can take in inoculating ourselves against the potential ravages of this and other viruses or diseases.

Finally, take the time to connect to the following link, and consider the benefits of increased doses of Vitamin D and what it can offer you in your cause for personal responsibility and preventative health practices - practices that holistically affect the community you live in and may die in.
