Dear Mr. Harper,
Due to my loss of confidence in Canada's election system, and democracy in general, I will no longer be voting in any election in Canada. I have decided to let you know my needs and desires as a Canadian citizen directly by email.
I think that in this day and age of computer technology we citizens could conceivably vote every day on any issue that directly concerns us by simply sending an email, or making a phonecall. You could, on your end, actually set up daily referenda which we could vote on, aiding you in assessing our concerns. Our opinions would help you greatly in realizing which laws needed to be revised or rescinded. And in the course of these referenda, there could be regular surveying of the effectiveness of your performance as a public servant.
I realize that this kind of ongoing consensus is the worst nightmare of most politicians, but it could be very effective in weeding out the dead weight in government, eventually supporting only those public servants who truly serve the interests of the people whom they are supposed to be representing. There would be a lot less griping from our neck of the woods, I can tell you that, right off.
Anyway, my point is this: I am taking this opportunity to speak to you about my concerns, hopefully on a daily basis, so that you won't have to guess what I'm thinking. I hope that this will be much more effective than just speaking in the polling booth once every few years. Voting has been nothing but a very unsatisfactory experience for me, as I am one of the millions who happen to be in the (large) minority. I trust you understand this shortfall of the democratic process better than most.
So here goes... I think that this is the beginning of a long and enlightening correspondence, and I'm really excited to finally have a voice.
Sincerely, Teresa Wild
