Among the Village of Cumberland’s main goals and objectives for 2009 is to finish the sewer and storm drainage master plans, improve communications with citizens, develop a plan for Maple Lake and introduce a fire department compensation program.

Those are among many more in the 2008 Annual Report, released by the village this week

The annual report also includes updates on other strategic plans and goals and the yearly financial statements.

Implementing policies that encourage rainwater catchment is an important step before installing water meters, said Ed Hoeppner with Aquarian Systems Inc.

“Once that happens there’s less inclination for municipalities to approve rain collection systems because then there’s an income associated with it,” he said.

Hoeppner presented to council this week about catchment on Hornby Island, saying that it is possible for people to have access to water without putting further strain on the municipal systems.

The presentation was for information only, and council thanked him for his time.

A permit for a communications tower on land included in the Trilogy lands has been rescinded.

Council approved the recommendation to cancel the permit, which had been given to Rogers Cantel in 1999, when Trilogy requested it be removed.

The village’s lawyers suggested it be done as well.

“It should have been done years ago,” said Anja Nurvo, chief administrative officer for Cumberland.
