This really is a must see......for those of you who don't know, there is a flock of Chimney Swifts who nest in Cumberland every Spring. They build their nests on the inside of the vacant chimney of the old school shop building on the corner of 1st street and Beaufort, across from the United Church. Between 6:30-ish and 8:30-ish every evening for the next month, Cumberland has the opportunity to be witness to an incredible natural phenomenon.
The Swifts spend the evening circling the area until they have gathered enough numbers. When they are all ready, they spiral down the chimney in a matter of seconds - up to 1000 birds disappearing down a small chimney opening in 20 seconds flat. The first time we saw it, it struck me as a special effect from a movie. It's really that amazing........and there is great viewing from the vacant field next to the building. Bring a blanket and a thermos of hot chocolate and spend the evening watching......it takes awhile for them to get it together before going down, but is absolutely worth the wait!
