2012 is definitely not just about one day in 2012; it is about a sea change that probably won't bear fruit for many decades. But I believe that 2012 could be seen by future historians as a temporal marker of a great renaissance that will raise a submerged continent of consciousness that has been suppressed by Western science and culture.

Aboriginal peoples in Canada on Wikipedia.

Aboriginal people in Canada are Peoples recognized in the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982, sections 25 and 35, respectively as Indians, Métis, and Inuit. It also refers to self-identification of Aboriginal Peoples who live within Canada, but who have not chosen to accept the extinction of their rights of Sovereignty or Aboriginal Title of their lands. These Indigenous Peoples who assert that their Sovereign rights have not been extinguished point to the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which is mentioned in the Canadian Constitution Act, 1982, Section 25, as well as to the British North America Act and the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties to which Canada and Great Britain are signatories, in support of this claim.

Thomas Paine's eloquent and pithy summation of the tyranny of yesterday applies equally to tyrants of today who would steal our democracy and environment from us. Paine, a leader of both the American and French Revolutions and author of the three best selling books of the 18th Century, including the seminal Common Sense, also said, "We have it in our power to begin the world over again."

With these truths in mind, Damien Gillis and Rafe Mair have joined forces in a bold new media venture, an online journal called The Common Sense Canadian, found at TheCanadian.org, which combines cutting-edge video, audio, and writing from Mair, Gillis, and a host of formidable contributors to bring you the stories and opinions our establishment media won't publish. The Common Sense Canadian tackles the issues that really matter to Canadians and the world, such as water, energy, food, democracy - not to mention government corruption and corporate greed. We approach these topics with purpose and courage and offer innovative, workable solutions from the best minds in these critical areas.

"Two paths lie before us," Jonathan Schell concluded his remarkable essay The Fate of the Earth more than twenty years ago. "One leads to death, the other to life. If we choose the first path...we in effect become the allies of death, and in everything we do our attachment to life will weaken: our vision, blinded to the abyss that has opened at our feet, will dim and grow confused; our will, discouraged by the thought of trying to build on such a precarious foundation anything that is meant to last, will slacken; and we will sink into stupefaction, as though we were gradually weaning ourselves from life in preparation for the end. On the other hand, if we reject our doom, and bend our efforts toward survival...then the anesthetic fog will lift: our vision, no longer straining not to see the obvious, will sharpen; our will, finding secure ground to build on, will be restored; and we will take full and clear possession of life again. One dayand it is hard to believe that it will not be soonwe will make our choice."

Chinese Culture
Traditional Chinese belief says that the soul of a person who dies in a foreign place wanders lost until their bones are returned home. For Chinese pioneers who died in Canada, Victoria's Chinese Cemetery at Harling Point was a temporary resting place until their bones could be sent back to China.

This beautifully expressive film uses archival materials and interviews to trace the history of the Vancouver Island cemetery, from controversy and neglect to its revival as a National Heritage site. It also examines how this past reflects the emergence of a contemporary Chinese Canadian identity, through the voices of two women from different generations. Their vibrant stories illuminate the complexities of growing up Chinese Canadian, including the loss of culture, the pain of not fitting in and the joy of finding one's place.

From the experiences of Chinese pioneers in an unwelcoming land to the efforts of subsequent generations to establish roots in Canada, From Harling Point is an eloquent exploration of tradition, belonging and the notion of home.

Climate Change
Thoughtful article by Immanuel Wallerstein

"Scientists have been warning us about the dangers of human-caused transformations of the earth's climate for about fifty years now. But in the last two to three years, there have been two important changes in the situation."
Global warming, or climate change, is fundamentally an issue of human rights and environmental justice that connects the local to the global. With rising temperatures, human lives—particularly in people of color, low-income, and Indigenous communities—are affected by compromised health, financial burdens, and social and cultural disruptions. Moreover, those who are most affected are least responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions that cause the problem—both globally and within the United States.

Climate justice is a movement from the grassroots to realize solutions to our climate and energy problems that ensure the right of all people to live, work, play, and pray in safe, healthy, and clean environments. We envision a just transition to a future free from fossils fuels that protects the most vulnerable from the impacts of climate change.
Global warming is real and we can make a difference.
We are living at the dawn of a new epoch. Year by year, degree by degree, Earth is growing warmer... a legacy of the Industrial Revolution, population growth, and our addiction to technology, speed and power.

Just as other generations spoke of a Great Plague and a Great Depression, our children will be compelled to endure The Great Warming - and find a way to conquer its consequences.

This objective is achieved through the development of a clear set of guidelines, a Model Plan, grounded in very practical and challenging situations, and through the organisation of thematic workshops where experiences are shared and cooperation between cities is strengthened

Earth Day
April 22 marks the 37th anniversary of Earth Day. Help the 6 million Canadians and over 500 million people worldwide spread awareness of earth conservation and protection by joining the Earth Day celebrations. Here are 5 tips to help you plan your own Earth Day festivities.
First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day (April 22) is celebrated as the birth of the environmental movement.

Earth Day is a powerful catalyst for change. The first Earth Day, spearheaded by Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson and Harvard University student Denis Hayes, involved 20 million participants in teach-ins that addressed decades of environmental pollution. The event inspired the US Congress to pass clean air and water acts, and establish the Environmental Protection Agency to research and monitor environmental issues and enforce environmental laws.

In 1990, two million Canadians joined 200 million people in 141 nations in celebrating the first International Earth Day. In many countries, the global event brought pressure on heads of state to take part in the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to address issues such as climate change and the world wide loss of species.

In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. They range from large public events, such as Victoria’s Earth Walk (5,000 participants), Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival at Hawrelak Park (30,000 participants), and Oakville, Ontario’s Waterways Clean-up (2,000 participants) to the thousands of small, private events staged by schools, employee groups and community groups.
Founded by the organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970, Earth Day Network (EDN) promotes environmental citizenship and year round progressive action worldwide.

Earth Day Network is a driving force steering environmental awareness around the world. Through Earth Day Network, activists connect, interact, and impact their communities, and create positive change in local, national, and global policies. EDN's international network reaches over 12,000 organizations in 174 countries, while the domestic program keeps over 3,000 groups and over 100,000 educators coordinating millions of community development and environmental protection activities throughout the year. As a result, Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a half billion people participate in our campaigns every year.
EcoKids is Earth Day Canada's environmental education program for youth who care about the planet. Since 1994, the EcoKids Program has empowered Canadian youth with environmental knowledge and hands-on activities, and presented this information in fun, exciting ways that increase awareness and encourage active community involvement.
The Search is on for Earth Day Canada's Hometown Heroes!

Hometown Heroes are dedicated Canadians committed to local environmental change. Faced with pressing environmental concerns, these individuals strive to create healthy and sustainable communities, while fostering long-term community awareness and action.

Their actions are an inspiration to us all and Earth Day Canada wants to celebrate these environmental stewards. Explore our site to find out how you, or someone you know, can be the next Hometown Hero.
"People who are working for change need to think about how to make their events draw on the solidarity and creativity of lots of people together. That's been happening ... but it's something we need to address. Bringing art and culture into politics is a way to express what we are seeking, what our vision of the world is."
Toyota Canada Inc. and Earth Day Canada established the Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program to help cultivate and nurture this environmental leadership. The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program encourages and rewards graduating high school students and Québec junior college students who have distinguished themselves through environmental community service, extracurricular and volunteer activities, and academic excellence.

Because environmental issues are increasingly being tackled through multidisciplinary approaches, future environmental leaders will come from a broad range of academic backgrounds. The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship is offered to students entering their first year of post-secondary studies in the discipline of their choice, to prepare themselves for the career of their choice.

The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program grants 15 awards of $5000 each annually, to be applied directly towards tuition, books, room and board (where applicable) or other educational expenses for the first year of post-secondary full-time studies in Canada.

We also work with First Nations to make sure their interests are represented—and that they receive funding to implement a viable, ecofriendly economy.

Mission Statement

Welcome to our website for micro broadcasters and listeners as well. Our existence is for the sole purpose of assisting other broadcasters to create a clean broadcast either on AM, FM, or internet as well as other sources that are available. We can also assist those who know absolutely nothing about producing a broadcast.

If you would like to become part of our broadcast team, or if you would like to become a broadcaster on your own simply let us know what your intentions are. We have in the past, and will again in the future be holding phone conferences with other broadcasters across America. These conferences most generally consist of people already broadcasting in some fashion or another who share their interest and knowledge with each other.

Imagine, if you will, people sharing ideas and technical advice all across the country. Imagine you are already a broadcaster and that there are other broadcasters out there with equipment you need, and they don't, you can help each other. Most people today are tired of listening to the same old stuff all the time, you as a broadcaster can give them something new, something different, something informative, wouldn't that be a change!

Whether you want to become a broadcaster or simply a talk show host, this is what THE MICRO EFFECT is all about.
WorldChanging.com works from a simple premise: that the tools, models and ideas for building a better future lie all around us. That plenty of people are working on tools for change, but the fields in which they work remain unconnected. That the motive, means and opportunity for profound positive change are already present. That another world is not just possible, it's here. We only need to put the pieces together.

Delicately peeling back the layers of her grandmother's life, filmmaker Linda Ohama discovers a painful, buried past in this feature length documentary. In poignant interviews, Asayo Murakami, now 103 years old, recalls life in Japan, her arrival in Canada as a "picture bride," her determination to marry a man of her choice, the bombing of Hiroshima and the forced relocation of her family during World War II. Beautifully rendered dramatic sequences are merged with an exquisite collection of memories, feelings, images and voices. Culminating in an emotional reunion with a long-lost daughter, this film is a personal reflection of Japanese-Canadian history and a testament to one woman's incredible endurance and spirit.
Mieko Ouchi is half Celtic, half Japanese... and all Canadian. In 1993, Mieko, an actor, began researching a documentary about her grandfather, Edward Ouchi, a Japanese immigrant to Canada. Then she was cast to star in The War Between Us, a film on the World War II internment of 22,000 Japanese-Canadians--re-enacting a key episode in her own community's history. Part Japanese-Canadian history, part autobiography and family chronicle, Shepherd's Pie and Sushi looks at complex questions of personal and cultural identity with a light touch. Using archival material, dramatic re-enactment, powerful scenes from The War Between Us and moving interviews with members of the Ouchi family, the film relates the early history of Japanese-Canadians and looks at Mieko's and her family's struggles with their own identities.

A Worldwide Campaign to raise awareness of Building 7

More than eight years after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, New York Supreme Court Justice Edward H. Lehner was hearing arguments in a courtroom less than a mile from Ground Zero about a ballot initiative to launch a new investigation of the 9/11 attacks. When the lawyer for the plaintiffs sponsoring the initiative explained that the 9/11 Commission report left many unanswered questions, including “Why did Building 7 come down,” the Judge replied quizzically, “Building what?”

Like Judge Lehner, millions of people do not know or remember only vaguely that a third tower called World Trade Center Building 7 also collapsed on September 11, 2001. In any other situation, the complete, free fall collapse of a 47-story skyscraper would be played over and over on the news. It would be discussed for years to come and building design codes would be completely rewritten. So, why does no one know about Building 7? And why did Building 7 come down?

The answers to these questions have far-reaching implications for our society. The goal of the “BuildingWhat?” campaign is to raise awareness of Building 7 so that together we can begin to address these questions.
Firefighters for 9-11 Truth is a non-partisan association of firefighters and affiliates created to increase awareness, provide public education, demand a real investigation that follows National Standards, and provide support to our Brothers and Sisters in need. We are deeply troubled by the “official” story, and the way the rescue workers from Ground Zero are being forgotten.

We believe there is overwhelming evidence of obstruction of justice, and destruction of evidence voiced even by numerous 9/11 Commissioners themselves. Senator Cleland resigned from the Commission stating, “This investigation is now compromised.”

September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the events in New York and Washington that have played a dramatic role in modern history. These events have provided a pretext for a War on Terror that has replaced the Cold War as a global conflict framework within which military invasions and occupations have taken place, as well as violations of international law and human rights and a widespread assault on the civil rights crucial to democracies. Global military spending, which began a rapid downswing after the end of the Cold War, has, with the help of the official account of the 9/11 attacks, risen to Cold War levels and continues to rise. The focus on military solutions to complex human problems has sidetracked humanity at the very moment when international cooperation is most required to address genuine challenges.

In the meantime, the credibility of the official reports on the 9/11 attacks (by the 9/11 Commission, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government or government-appointed agencies) has been questioned by millions of citizens in the United States and abroad, including victim family members, expert witnesses and international legal experts.

The International Center for 9/11 Studies has therefore decided to sponsor four days of International Hearings in the city of Toronto, Canada on the 10th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2

In an information-packed presentation of 58 minutes Kevin Ryan delivers a damning indictment of the official investigations of the total ... all » collapses of the Twin Towers and Building 7. Ryan's solid scholarship and application of the scientific method stands in stark contrast to the official investigations, whose dishonesty and corrupt anti-scientific methods Ryan exposes in abundance.

Ryan explains details of the investigation by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) not acknowledged by the Institute, such as its failure to experimentally verify the floor pancake theory, forcing it to invent a new theory about the Towers' collapse. Ryan notes commonalities in the WTC investigations by NIST and FEMA, and the investigation of the 1995 Oklahoma City Building, such as a high degree of overlap in the leaders of the respective investigations.

Ryan unquestionably qualifies as a whistleblower. Having been promoted to the top manager of Underwriter's Laboratories water testing division, Ryan was dismissed on November of 2004 after an e-mail from him to Dr Frank Gayle of NIST questioning the collapse of the twin towers became public.

Why We Resist
the 2010 Winter Olympics
From the website:

The Olympics are not about the human spirit & have little to do with athletic excellence; they are a multi-billion dollar industry backed by powerful elites, real estate, construction, hotel, tourism and television corporations, working hand in hand with their partners in crime: government officials & members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
From the website:

The 2010 Winter Olympics will take place in Vancouver & Whistler, on unceded Indigenous land, from February 12-28 2010. Over the past seven years, there has been a groundswell of opposition to the Games. This began in 2002 when members of the St'at'imc and Secwepemc Nations filed a submission with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to oppose the bid.

Given the range of social injustices perpetrated by the Games, the anti-Olympics movement has created an opportunity for a diversity of groups, individuals, and communities to join forces.

Peak Oil
Crude Impact is an award-winning documentary film which Chris Vernon of TheOilDrum.com called " a terrific film... the best documentary I have seen on the subject." This feature film explores the interconnection between human domination of the planet, and the discovery and use of oil.
After the global oil peak production global carrying capacity will be impossible to maintain. The world economy will crash or stagnate eventually leading to a die off of the human population within the next fifty years.
"Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon. This is not the wacky proclamation of a doomsday cult, apocalypse bible prophecy sect, or conspiracy theory society. Rather, it is the scientific conclusion of the best paid, most widely-respected geologists, physicists, bankers, and investors in the world. These are rational, professional, conservative individuals who are absolutely terrified by a phenomenon known as global "Peak Oil. "
Local Future helps communities develop compassionate, sustainable, local, systems to provide jobs, food, energy, transportation, and essential services.

Local Future Network members develop these systems by helping their community to transition from dependent units of the failed global economy; to independent cultures of compassionate, sustainable, local economy.
"Oil Smoke & Mirrors" offers us a sobering critique of our perceived recent history, of our present global circumstances, and of our shared future in light of imminent, under-reported and mis-represented energy production constraints.

Through a series of impressively candid, informed and articulate interviews, this film argues that the bizzare events surrounding the 9/11 attacks, and the equally bizzare prosecution of the so-called "war on terror", can be more credibly understood in the wider context of an imminent and critical divergence between available global oil supply and increasing global oil demand.

The picture "Oil, Smoke & Mirrors" paints is one of a tragically hyper-mediated global-political culture, which, for whatever reason, demonstrably disassociates itself from the values it claims to represent.
Peak oil
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Hubbert peak theory, also known as peak oil, is an influential theory concerning the long-term rate of conventional oil, or Petroleum, and other fossil fuels production and depletion. It predicts that future world oil production will soon reach a peak and then decline. Some observers such as Kenneth S. Deffeyes, Matthew Simmons, and James Howard Kunstler believe that because of the high dependence of most modern industrial transport systems on inexpensive oil, the impending post-peak production decline and possible resulting severe price increases will herald negative implications for the future global economic outlook.

Note, because of world population growth, oil production per capita peaked in 1979 (with a plateau 1973-1979)/ "

WORLD WITHOUT OIL is a serious game for the public good. WWO invited people from all walks of life to contribute “collective imagination” to confront a real-world issue: the risk our unbridled thirst for oil poses to our economy, climate and quality of life. It’s a milestone in the quest to use games as democratic, collaborative platforms for exploring possible futures and sparking future-changing action. WWO set the model for using a hot net-native storytelling method (‘alternate reality’) to meet civic and educational goals. Best of all, it was compellingly fun.

Today's converging energy, environmental, and political-economic stresses could cause a breakdown of national and global order. And some kinds of breakdown could even open up extraordinary opportunities for creative, bold reform of our societies, if we're prepared to exploit these opportunities when they arise.

SPP
Review of Linda McQuaig’s “Holding the Bully’s Coat” by Stephen Lendman

“That underscores Canada’s moral depravity under Stephen Harper’s leadership umbilically linked to the roguish Bush regime in Washington.”

Linda McQuaig is a prominent, award-winning Canadian journalist, sadly less well known in the US because she writes about her own country. She was a national reporter for the Toronto Globe and Mail before joining the Toronto Star where she now covers Canadian politics with her trademark combination of solid research, keen analysis, irreverence and passion. She’s easy to read, never boring, and fearless. The National Post called her “Canada’s Michael Moore.”

McQuaig is also a prolific author with a well-deserved reputation for taking on the establishment. In her previous seven books, she challenged Canada’s deficit reduction scheme to gut essential social services. She explained how the rich used the country’s tax system for greater riches the way it happened in the US since Ronald Reagan, then exploded under George Bush. She exposed the fraud of “free trade” empowering giant corporations over sovereign states while exploiting working people everywhere.

This political strike goes to the very heart of society and is an outrage against sovereignty, democracy and the true national interests of all three countries involved"it is called SPP. They say the letters stand for:

The Security, Prosperity Partnership of North America.

In fact herein "Security" stands for Lockdown: "Prosperity" stands for permanent privatization of all natural and commercial resources and the permanent destruction of all the workers rights to any share in that 'prosperity.' The "partnership" is actually an agreement between the International Corporatocracy to devour everything that can be sold, and to do it in the name of three 'nations' that will cease to exist once this agreement is formally accepted-without even consulting the populations of the nations that were once thought to be sovereign states.
While we were busy, some in our government were busy too.....
Stephen Harper, the George Bush of the “Great White North”, fervently supports the SPP and its ostensible beneficence to “the people.”

This time brings a great opportunity for rethinking the way we live and making conscious choices about what kind of community and world we would like to live in. Launched in February 2001, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper trains other individuals and volunteer groups to be local water guardians and to report pollution concerns.

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper fulfills its mission by educating the public about Lake Ontario and the Great Lakes Basin and by conducting research and public education activities on behalf of the watershed. Our goal is to restore and protect Lake Ontario's natural resources, as well as contribute to its aesthetic, social recreational and economic values.

The Water Sustainability Project (WSP) began in January of 2003 at the University of Victoria's POLIS Project on Ecological Governance in British Columbia, Canada. The initial focus of the project was to understand the structure and dynamics of urban water use, and to provide mechanisms to help reorient Canadian water management from supply to demand-side approaches. Formerly the Urban Water Demand Management Project (UWDM), the initiative changed its name in 2005 to reflect a transition to promoting demand management and ecological governance as part of the broader goal of sustainable water management.

Practising ecological governance engages society to create the systemic reforms required to develop sustainability. By actively seeking ways to integrate ecosystem values and decision-making structures and processes (i.e. markets, law and policy, planning and management), the intent is to develop systems that embed the notion of ecological sustainability in government, business and industry, and civil society. This conception of ecological governance provides a useful framework for analysis when considering efforts aimed at sustainably managing water resources in Canada.

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. That man is former Vice President Al Gore, who, in the wake of defeat in the 2000 election, re-set the course of his life to focus on a last-ditch, all-out effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change.

"The purpose for this Timeline is not to prove that I have the ability to predict the future. The future will almost certainly not unfold exactly as I have indicated below. The point is to try now to have a rational understanding of the many areas of developing crises currently in process in our world, and then extrapolate them out to see how they might affect individual life on a day-to-day basis in the future. Only then will it be possible to make pre-emptive plans in order to ease the strain on yourself and the people you love. Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up for a beer at informal sessions known as Green Drinks.

We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you'll be made welcome. Just say, "are you green?" and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network.

These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. It's a force for the good and we'd like to help it spread to other cities. Contact your local node to get the latest info about coming along.

Community Responses for a Changing Energy Future

A television series on positive responses to energy decline and climate change through local community action.
"Never before have our emerging environmental crises been laid out so clearly before us. Rather than shouting from the fringes, respected economists, scientists, and politicians are sounding the warnings in high-profile journals and the halls of government -- warnings that our oceans are dying, that the ice shelves are melting, and that we are setting ourselves up for the most massive and devastating market failure humanity has ever seen.
So we recycle our garbage. We vote greener. We buy sleek, new hybrid cars and fill our houses with energy-efficient light bulbs. And we put our money and faith in the brave and ingenious technologies that will rescue us from the whirlwind.

But it won't be enough. Because this is not, fundamentally, a technological problem. Nor is it, fundamentally, a political problem. This is a problem of appetites, and of narcissism, and of self-deceit. The planet is breaking, and it is breaking under the weight of our hunger for more. To reform the world, we must first reform ourselves."
The Earth Charter
... is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society for the 21st century. Created by the largest global consultation process ever associated with an international declaration, endorsed by thousands of organizations representing millions of individuals, the Earth Charter seeks to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family and the larger living world. The Earth Charter is an expression of hope and a call to help create a global partnership at a critical juncture in history.

Water, like air, is a necessity of human life. It is also, according to Fortune magazine, "One of the world's great business opportunities. It promises to be to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th."

In the past ten years, three giant global corporations have quietly assumed control over the water supplied to almost 300 million people in every continent of the world. A 12-month investigation by journalists in Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America shows that the results range from questionable to disastrous. And it shows how well-meaning municipal governments in the U.S. and Canada can become vulnerable to the persuasive techniques of these high-powered corporate giants.
No matter where on Earth we live,
we are all residents of a watershed.

Throughout history, all organized groups have endeavoured to protect their home watersheds, or territories. Sentinel were stationed throughout the highlands of the watershed to herald the coming of friends or the approach of threats.

Threats to our watersheds exist to this day, whether they come from careless individuals, compromising governments, or insensitive corporations.

The Watershed Sentinel keeps watch and informs.
